FANTASMA SELECTED: SOME ABSTRACT FILMS AND VIDEOS BY JAMES FOTOPOULOS
Since his first feature film Zero (1997), James Fotopoulos has produced a number of works that explore abstraction or semi-abstraction. This program feature some of these these films and videos, such as the found footage and leader scratched 16mm short films 2001 Circle 1 and 2, digitally treated television assassination footage and drawings in the 2007 video Knot 5, 16mm high con films re-manipulated digitally in the Hidden Objects (2003/2004), in-camera solarization patterns in the 2003 video Patterns and parts 5-9 of the 2005 feature The Mirror Mask, which uses an array of computer techniques from primitive painting and animation software to early CGI.

The films of James Fotopoulos have been screened and exhibited at many sites, including the International Film Festival Rotterdam, MoMA PS1, Sundance Film Festival, Walker Art Center, Whitney Biennial, New York Museum of Modern Art, Museum of Art and Design, London Film Festival, Festival del Film Locarno, Anthology Film Archives and Andy Warhol Museum, among many others.
